Film career

Khan made his film debut in the 2005 film Sitam, which he produced and wrote the lyrics for.[1] Since then he has produced, directed, written and acted in several low-budget Hindi and Bhojpuri films. He has also contributed the lyrics to the soundtrack of a few of his films.

Khan gained mainstream attention with his 2008 Hindi film Deshdrohi which he produced and acted in. The film garnered some publicity in the wake of the 2008 attacks on North Indians in Maharashtra, with which the film's release coincided. Some scenes of the film were alleged to be derogatory and said to hurt the sentiments of the local Marathi population of Mumbai by the head of Mumbai office of Central Board of Film Certification.[4] The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena was quick to protest against the movie.[5][6][7] It has been argued that the publicity generated provided the film much more publicity than it would have been able to garner on its own accord.[8] Despite the hype, the critical response to the film was overwhelmingly negative.[9] The film received the Lajja Award for Worst Treatment of a Serious Issue at the 2008 Golden Kela Awards in Delhi.[10]

Khan is reportedly working on a follow-up to Desh Drohi, titled Desh Drohi 2 - 26/11 War In Mumbai. While the previous film was a representation of the alleged discrimination of north Indians in Mumbai, the follow-up promises to deal with the 2008 Mumbai attacks.[11]

Television career

Bigg Boss

Khan made his television debut in the 3rd season of Indian reality TV programme Bigg Boss,[14] which is the Indian version of Celebrity Big Brother.[15]

He was nominated for eviction by his fellow housemates for the first, second and third week running. He survived the first week's eviction, which saw Jaya Sawant evicted and the second week's eviction which did not see any housemate evicted due to Diwali.[16]

Although he was already nominated for eviction for the third week consecutively, he eventually became the first celebrity to be prematurely ejected from the Big Boss house because of his violent behavior towards other house mates. Khan verbally abused Rohit Verma and threw a water bottle at him which hit Shamita Shetty, he also had an altercation with comedian Raju Srivastav. Khan was asked to leave the house that very night.[17]

On 19 November, Khan re-entered the Bigg Boss house with the help of a wild card entry.[18] His re-entry stint in the Bigg Boss house ended on Day 67 in Week 10 of the show.

Personal life

Khan ran away from his home in Deoband to Mumbai to become a film hero. When that did not work out he started a garment and construction business. When his business flourished he decided to invest in films.[1]

On the reality television show Bigg Boss Khan has made claims of being a multimillionaire who lives in a 21,000 sq ft (2,000 m2) villa, gets his milk from Holland, water from France and tea from London. In an interview with TV channel Bindass, Khan claims that his export business turnover is in the tune of Rs.100 crores.[19]

On his return to the Bigg Boss house, Khan showed an image of Villa Bromilia,[20] a property in the under construction in the Al Barari development near the Dubai International Airport, and claimed that it belonged to him.[21] Al Barari, a Dubai-based estate company, is the property developer and owner of the still-under-construction villa.
